Gianaris Campaign Funding
Campaign finance is another area where Senator Michael Gianaris’ rhetoric doesn’t meet reality.
Despite recent posturing, such as pledging to stop taking real estate money, and introducing legislation to reduce the amount that can be given to state candidates, Senator Gianaris is a big money politician, with big money.
According to campaign finance records, Senator Michael Gianaris raised $5,889,500.69 between January 1, 2000 and March 1, 2019. Only about 2% of that came from individuals who donated less than $175. The average percentage of small donor contributions for New York State politicians is more than twice that - about 5%.
As of January 2019, Senator Gianaris has $2,538,142.41 in campaign funds.
Senator Gianaris’ proposal to change the rules - without offering to give up funds raised under the old rules - would have the clear effect of favoring incumbents such as himself who are sitting on hordes of campaign cash, over challengers seeking accountability.
